Before Use

Fill the butane until you see the butane window 3/4 full. Never fill it to the top because the Wispr will start to vent it and you will have to wait a little extra time to get going.

Pack your herb chamber before starting to heat the Wispr up. With most vapes you want it to reach temperature before packing it, but the Wispr is one of the only exceptions.

During Use

Take slow and steady draws from the Wispr. The heat level is pretty much regulated by how fast or slow you draw. I have found that the best vapor quality is achieved when you take a long and steady pull rather than a really strong one. The stronger I pulled the more burnt taste I got.

Don’t forget to stir your material about half way through. For some reason since the herb chamber is capped by the mouthpiece it made me forget to open it up every now and then to stir. Stirring can’t be overlooked because it is going to greatly increase the life of your material and give you a better flavor throughout.

A glimpse inside the Wispr’s butane reservoir window.

After Use

CLEAN OUT THE HERB CHAMBER. Sorry for the all caps there, but this is really important with the Wispr. The way the chamber is designed with the spike in the middle it helps vape your material more evenly, but at the same time makes cleaning a necessity more often. Especially if you purchased the optimizer for the herb chamber which adds more spikes in there.

You are going to hear your Wispr making a slight hissing noise, not nearly as bad as the Iolite, so don’t panic. This is simply the Wispr dissipating heat and venting additional butane. It should only last a minute or two, but I know a lot of people initially get freaked.

Many are confused on where exactly the Wispr has improved on the Iolite. So instead of listing improvements I believe it is easiest to just compare the two. Below are some direct comparisons between the two in the categories that really matter. Let’s get started.

Vapor Quality

The Iolite’s vapor quality is anything but consistent. I’ve used it a million times and each time it was kind of a gamble on what I was going to get. Sometimes I would get really thick and dense vapor and other times I would end up with airy pulls that I was left wondering if there was any vapor at all. This might have been OK if I could identify it was something I was doing wrong, but that didn’t appear to be the case.

The Wispr delivers a nice vapor quality consistently. You can get some airy pulls from it sometimes but it is very rare. Every time I’ve fired up my Wispr I’ve been happy with it. I’ve also found that taking long and slow draws really increases the vapor quality. You’ll get huge vapor pulls that are also very smooth. In the end the Wispr is a huge improvement in vapor quality over the Iolite.

Advantage: Wispr

Construction/Build

The Iolite is made of a pretty durable plastic design with a curved edge design that makes the Iolite slide into your pocket pretty comfortably. The downside to the curved design though is you can’t stand the Iolite straight up when not pulling from it, which can unevenly vaporize your material. The mouthpiece is also plastic and threaded, so it screws onto the Iolite’s herb chamber cap. Any time you have herb interacting with threading like that it can end up pretty messy. A lot of the time material ends up getting stuck int he threading making it either incredibly difficult or down right impossible to screw in.

The Wispr is made of the same plastic material as the Iolite, but instead of the curved design you have a squared design so you can actually stand it straight up. The mouthpiece is not plastic though, it is silicon and instead of detaching from the herb chamber cap it actually tucks down into the Wispr. The squared design isn’t quite as portable as the curved design but being able to stand it up when not pulling is a clear advantage.

Advantage: Wispr

Portability

The Iolite’s curved design I mentioned above really makes it pocket size. You can comfortably slide it in your pocket and even forget it’s there. The mouthpiece is annoying to screw on and off each time though. You can put it in your pocket with the mouthpiece still attached but it makes it pretty uncomfortable.

The Wispr’s squared design is not nearly as comfortable in your pocket as the Iolite’s curved design, but it does have the advantage with the mouthpiece. Instead of unscrewing the mouthpiece each time simply tuck it down into the Wispr and throw it into your pocket. So you sacrifice some comfort for speed and easier use. There is no clear winner here.

Advantage: Push

Both herb chambers hold about the same amount, but the Wispr has a flexible mouthpiece.

Heat Up Time

The Iolite in my experience takes at least 3 to 4 minutes to reach temperature and really start delivering good vapor pulls. On the Iolite there is no indicator to let you know exactly when the Iolite is heated up, so you kind of have to just keep randomly pulling until you start to get thick vapor.

The Wispr on the other hand takes only about 2 minutes for the LED light to come on letting you know it has reached its temperature. After that it only takes about 45 seconds before you get some really nice and thick vapor. So not only does the Wispr heat up faster, but it also has the light to indicate exactly when it is heated up.

Advantage: Wispr

Butane Efficiency

The Iolite used to get me about 2 full vaporizing sessions before the butane would run out. A typical session for me is about an hour, so you can think about 2 hours of continuous use on one full butane charge. Unfortunately with the Iolite there is no indicator to let you know what your butane level is at. You pretty much have to use it until it is gone and then just refill.

The Wispr does have a small butane window to always show you how much butane you have left, which to me is one of the greatest new features of the Wispr compared to the Iolite. Also on a full butane charge I usually get 3 sessions, as opposed to 2, with the Wispr. So in the end the Wispr outperforms the Iolite across the board here.

Advantage: Wispr

Bottom Line

As you can see the Wispr has been a steady improvement over the Iolite in most areas. The squared design, even though it allows the Wispr to stand up, is less portable but other than that you have a vape that pretty much leaves the Iolite in the dust.

The Wispr portable vaporizer is the newest vaporizer by Oglesby & Butler, the creators of the Iolite and later the Iolite 2.0. The Iolite was and still is one the most popular portable vaporizers available. Mostly due to its small size and how it works even in some of the most extreme conditions. With the Wispr they set out to improve on the Iolite across the board, but have they? Let’s take a look and find out.

The design of the Wispr is probably the first thing that is going to stick out and be noticed. Gone are the smooth curved edges of the Iolite, replaced by a more squared design. My first thought was it looks like it wouldn’t be too comfortable in your pocket, but at the same time the squared bottom would give you the ability to stand the Wispr straight up instead of having to lay it down.

The Optimizer fits right in the Wispr’s herb chamber and helps vaporize your material more evenly.

The designer looking pattern on the Wispr isn’t all for show. Those are actually small vents that work to actively disperse any extra heat and stop the Wispr from heating up to the point where it would be uncomfortable to hold. The mouthpiece has seen a redesign as well. Instead of a threaded stiff mouthpiece there is now a silicon mouthpiece that can tuck down into the Wispr, making it easier to carry with you.

Another new welcome addition to the Wispr is the butane window. Now you can see directly into where the butane is held on the Wispr to see how much butane you have left at any given time. This solves a major problem the Iolite had. Can’t say how many interrupted sessions I’ve had because I wasn’t aware the butane was almost gone.

Packing the Wispr is really easy. The mouthpiece pulls off with the herb chamber cap, which you can then dump your material right into the chamber. Once your material is loaded simply put the mouthpiece back on and click down the trigger on the side of the Wispr. You can hear the Wispr begin to heat up instantly. After about 2 minutes you are all set to take your first pull. You will actually see a small LED light on the side light up, letting you know the Wispr is heated up.

When you see the small orange sticker exposed, you know the Wispr is switched on.

Pulling from the Wispr is pretty comfortable, it seems to mix the perfect amount of outside air and vapor to deliver some cool vapor. Experimenting with draw speeds a little you can tell you can get the vapor thicker or thinner depending on how fast or slow respectively.

After about 15 minutes of use I could tell the vapor was getting really thin. I opened up the herb chamber and gave the material a quick stir. Doing so gave me a couple more thicker pulls before it was finally done.

Regarding the butane, I was able to get just about 3 full sessions in with the Wispr before it was time to refill. This is an improvement over the Iolite, which usually you would be lucky to get 2 sessions. This improvement is especially important because you really don’t want to have to worry about carrying butane with you if you are planning on using the Wispr when you are out.

The Wispr really is perfect for anyone who is going to be doing stuff like skateboarding, biking, hiking, snowboarding, anything outside where weather conditions might otherwise spoil any chance of using a vape. The Wispr will heat up under pretty much any condition, including high altitudes. Give me a couple years to get in shape and I’ll climb Everest and have a quick vape session with my Wispr.

I’ve really enjoyed my time with the Wispr. I take frequent trips into the city and the Wispr just seems like one of those vapes that is perfect for the car ride. I don’t suggest using a vape while driving in most cases, but I really love having mine on me for some nice rides with the windows down. So if you can’t quite afford a Plenty herbal vaporizer just yet or would rather buy something a bit more portable, then consider the Wispr, which is at the end of the day a high quality portable vape that has relatively low maintenance if you don’t mind using butane to vaporize.
